Parkumäki Memorial
About 15 km from Rantasalmi village centre, by a 17th century post road (now called Muistomerkintie road), is the memorial to the battle of Parkumäki fought on July 21st 1789 between Finnish-Swedish troops and the Russians. The tower-like memorial was erected in 1929 on Parkumäki hill, from which opens a vast view over lake Haukivesi and over the old battlefield surroundings. There is a blue signpost for the memorial by road 464. At the first crossroads, a couple of hundred meters before the memorial, is Parkumäki school built in early 20th century. Next to the memorial is an associations’ house from the 1930’s, and north from the memorial is a weaver’s workshop “Mirjan kudontakammari”. The road leads back to main road 464 by Tammenlahti road.

Haapaniemi Memorial
The Haapaniemi Cadet School Memorial erected in 1931 is located on the original site of the school, about 10 km northwest from Rantasalmi village centre. Relics of the building’s stone base can still be seen at the location. The festivities of the 225th anniversary of Finnish cadet education were held in Rantasalmi in the summer in 2004. During that weekend the Haapaniemi Cadet School exhibition was opened.
