NATIONAL PARK LINNANSAARI

This National park is about unique fresh water archipelago, traditional agriculture and northern deciduous forests and its species. It is also a home an extremely endangered specie of seal: saimaa ringed seal Pusa hispida saimensis
National Park area consists of 130 islands and hundres of smaller islets and skerries in lake Haukivesi, which is part of great lake Saimaa. National Park was established in 1956 and it is second oldest National Park in Finland.
Best way to explore the park is to take sightseeing boat or by paddling. There are several small camp places in the archipelago where you are allowed to over night. Every camp site has fire place, fire woods and dry toilet. It is not allowed to over night or make fire outside the marked camp sites.
You are free to walk in the islands, pick up berries and mushrooms, but nothing else. Flowers, trees and specially animals should be left in piece. They are part of the park and under protection. Some islands and skerries are kept protected and they are not allowed to land at all.
In the main island, name of Linnansaari, is one bigger camp site Sammakkoniemi, where are also shelters to sleep, sauna, many fire places, covered kitchen area, summer cafe and renting place. In summer scheluded boat transportation to the park is stopping in Sammakkoniemi. Scheluded boat transportation is coming from Oravi and from Porosalmi, Rantasalmi. There are also several nature trails to follow, 2 – 7km of lenght.
Near by Sammakkoniemi situated also a museum area where are old buildings and a yard is taken care of by mowing. Buildings are open for every body and it is free. Summer time sheep graze the area and keep the landscape as a meadows.

SEAL  AND BIRD WATCHING IN NATIONAL PARK
Several companies offer seal and bird watching cruises. Saimaa ringed seal is best visible in spring and in autumn, birds in spring and summer time.

This church was totally destroyed inside by a big fire at year 1984. After that the hole inner furnishing was made totally new, in modern way. The fire got start from a slash and one of the church prick towers collapsed. The outer shelter is from year 1910 and it is desing by Josef Stenbäck and it presents late gothic style. Churc is open in summer time daily 12-18.

RANTASALMI HERITAGE MUSEUM

Pictures and information
Museum area and buildings tells about peasant style of living at beginning of 1900 century. From June to July museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday 11:00 – 17:00. Outside opening hours it is allowed to look around the buildings and surroundings only outside. No entrace fee.

HAAPANIEMEN KADETTIKOULU EXHIBITION
1781 – 1818 military officer training school was here in Rantasalmi. In those days Finland was part of Sweden and the border between Sweden and Russia was in Rantasalmi. This officer trainer school was the first, but not only in Finland but also in Sweden. Before that all officers were getting their education in France. In this school, young teenagers, who all belong to higher society, had to learn to speak and to write france, to dance, to ride a horse, to fence and theatre. These subjects were essential in nobelmans life in those days. This small exhibition tells about persons who were establishing and teatching in the school and something about the buildings, which were burn down 1818.

THE STATUE OF PEKKA LIPPONEN

Aarno Haapakoski (pen name Outsider) created the fictional character of Pekka Lipponen, who has ventured in movies and in radio plays. Pekka Lipponen is from Rantasalmi Saparomäki and he is a businessman and cosmopolitan.

JUMIKKALA MANSION
Jumikkala mansion is situated on Kylätie Rantasalmi. Around the main building of Jumikkala mansion there’s a renovated garden, rhododendron plantings, an old gunpowder shop and many granaries. In one of the granaries there’s a museum and summer cafe. The manor spaces can be rented for various events.

A Wide View from The Hyppinki Hill.
The lookout tower at Osikonmäki was built in the autumn of the year 2000 as a result of extensive local and nationwide cooperation. The lookout tower is one of the Leader II projects.
The area where the tower stands has been planned to serve hikers and student groups, many kinds of events, etc.
The lookout tower stands on the Hyppinki Hill, on the Papinmäki Road, only two kilometres away from the municipal centre of Rantasalmi. The
lookout tower area belongs to a regional hiking route and a wider regional plan called The Green Gold Culture Road.
The lookout tower is open for visitors also during the winter.

LINTUKOTO COUNTRY GARDEN
Lintukoto is a casual and luxuriant country garden which is full of easy maintenance garden plants. Lintukoto garden is being built for 15 years with love. The garden hides playgrounds for children, summer kitchen and a lot of herbaceous borders.

A MIGHTY JOURNEY
Aika matka – A Mighty Journey – is a 3-kilometer environmental trail located in the downtown of Rantasalmi. It consists of nine stops and 12 fascinating stories which deal with the geology and  with the culture history of the region. Aika matka welcomes you to a trip throughout time.
The culture historical stories in this brochure are marked with a key symbol, whereas those dealing with geological topics bear the sign of an ancient granite rock.

KORHOLA FARM ANIMAL YARD
Korhola Farm animal yard is open at summer time 10-18. Entrance fee 5€. Korhola is a home for Finnhorse Sati, warmblood horse Ellu, Iines the donkey, Marge and Mikaela cows, Elmeri and Elviira micro pigs, Snow White goat, Kuisma sheep and 8 Finnish sheeps, peacock, chickens, rabbits and cats.

WANHA KIEVARI FARM ANIMAL YARD

In addition to traditional farm animals like sheeps, goats, chickens, mini pigs and different kinds of rodents there are also some unusual animals in the farm animal yard of Wanha Kievari.
Different kinds of snakes, cockroaches, crickets and tarantulas thrive in their terrarium.
Farm animals are let free in the yard and it is allowed to feed and stroke them. It is also allowed to eat your picnic lunch or barbecue in the Wanha Kievari’s yard.
